ART DISCOVERED S/S 2015

‘ART DISCOVERED’ SPRING/SUMMER EXHIBITION is a creative initiative inaugurated by The Art Fellas for budding artists to showcase their artworks. It is akin to a mini art fair, but without the fresh white walls that set apart each booth. This biannual exhibition, with the first edition held from 7th to 15th February 2015, is the gallerist’s efforts to discover potential artists and provide them a platform for their artworks to be exposed to the commercial art market.

“IT’S REALLY JUST OUR WAY TO NURTURE THE LOCAL ART SCENE. WE’RE NOT LOOKING TO MAKE ART DISCOVERED A PROFIT-MAKING PLATFORM.”

— Cruz Phua, co-founder of The Art Fellas

Upon stepping into the gallery space, one is welcomed by a sense of familiarity by the artworks displayed. HDB blocks, iconic 90s playground feature and rippling waves are what one will see painted on the canvases. Benny Teo, the artist behind these works, uses everyday spaces as his subjects with the aim of recreating the sense of ambience that identifies the environments he depicts. Another artist who explores an everyday theme is Jaxton Su, an oil painter behind a series of surreal artworks. In one of his works featured, he portrays an adolescent who is holding a smartphone in a glasshouse that is placed at the ground level of a HDB block. This imagery parallels the common judgment of the younger generation, who is otherwise known as the ‘strawberry generation’, by those who fall under ‘generation Y’ or older.

Being: Familiarity by Benny Teo

Though works featured at the exhibition cover a wide spectrum, they have all been meticulously selected and artists have been given valuable insight on going commercial, including group guidance sessions on the art selection process, packaging and marketing. The programme also gives these 13 artists a platform to expand their network with art collectors and seasoned artists, and gain more knowledge about the industry and the market.

“I AM GRATEFUL FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE ABLE TO GAIN A CERTAIN LEVEL OF EXPOSURE AND EXPERIENCE FROM THE EVER-DEVELOPING ARTISTIC COMMUNITY HERE IN SINGAPORE.”

— Shen Jiaqi, participating artist

Those who are interested in the programme may look out for future editions where the gallerist plans to cover a much wider spectrum of art professions.
