Obscured Writers' Kit

Obscured's Writing Format

Sean Poon

This formatting guide applies primarily to articles that are posted onto the respective category-blogs.

For convenience's sake, this guide uses the term "artist" to refer to the individual/entity that is being featured.

Article Title

The article title should be something that alludes to the nature of the content. A short phrase, perhaps using words from the article, might work. However, avoid anything that's overly generic, that could apply to any other artists that are featured.

Thumbnail Image

This is the first image that is seen when a reader views your article, so choose one that best encapsulates either the artist's work, or the essence of the article.

In addition, because the thumbnail image is also the largest image on the article (yes, the irony), please upload an image that is high-resolution. Like all other images on the site, the rule of thumb is that it should be minimally 1000 pixels wide, though larger would be better.

When you hover your cursor over the uploaded image, a small ring should appear over the thumbnail image - this indicates where the focus of the image will be. Do adjust it accordingly, if necessary.

Excerpt

Like the thumbnail image, the article's excerpt appears on the main page.

For the sake of consistency, the excerpt should ideally be either 3 or 4 lines long when viewed on Obscured's main page. This translates to roughly 30 to 40 words, or 2 to just under 3 lines long when viewed within the Squarespace Excerpt text field.

In addition, the first line in the excerpt field should begin with, "Featuring [insert name of artist". This should then be italicized.

Artist Bio

This is the first text-block of the article. Every article begins with the name of the featured artist, in the form of "Featuring [insert artist's name]".

This is then followed by a paragraph break (i.e. press Enter on your keyboard).

Subsequently, more information (i.e. physical address and web address) on the artist is given. Physical addresses are included only when relevant, while a web address should be provided. The order of listing is as follows.

  1. Physical Address - include it should the feature have one. Break this up into multiple lines, using a line break (i.e. press Shift+Enter on your keyboard)
  2. Web Address - If the feature has a professional page (be it a website, or a Facebook page), include this link. Avoid including the link to a personal blog page, unless the feature does not have any other web addresses, or if its relevant. If there are multiple web addresses to be included, separate them into different lines using a line break.

After the Artist Bio text block, insert a Spacer block - use the default height.

Introductory Paragraph

Pretty self explanatory.

When it comes to capitalizing and bolding the first few words of the Introductory paragraph, either:

  1. Do it to the point where its short, yet tantalizes the reader to continue reading, or
  2. Capitalise and bold the first 3 words, or the first few words that are sufficient to tantalise the reader, while still making sense.
