Epstien, also known as Epistemology for Students, is an online course aimed at first-year and graduate students
The objective of the course is to provide the student with an introduction to medical terminology, theories on illness and disease, and how to conduct research into new areas in medical science. The course also helps students build understanding of the health care system, its workings and how it is structured.
As the name suggests, the program emphasizes knowledge of medical terminology and provides students with a solid foundation for their own studies. It introduces concepts such as the basic theories of disease and illness and then goes on to explain how the theories are applied in real situations.
Students will learn about medical terms such as biologic, physical and biochemical. There is an emphasis on how these medical terms are related to the different diseases and illnesses, and how they relate to each other. For instance, physical means 'identical to the external world', while biological indicates 'beings which can be regarded as organisms'. Then there is biochemical, which signifies 'biological processes'organisms and minerals that exist in the body'. Then there is the biopsychosocial model, which focuses on how the mental, social, emotional and physical components of people and how they interact with each other.
Epstien is not a medical terminology course; it focuses more on teaching students about the theories behind medicine. Students are expected to have a basic level of understanding in medical terminology, but Epstien also prepares them to apply the knowledge they already possess to their studies in the future.
Major topics covered include genetics, infectious diseases, human behavior, statistics, insurance and health systems. The online course uses videos, audio and visual materials to make the topics easier to understand and follow. Other courses such as those on statistics and insurance, however, can be done in classroom settings.
